In onshore seismic processing the first break time is commonly used for computing static. The number of acquisition channels has increased rapidly in the past three decades. As a result the first-break picking has been one of the most burdensome tasks for the processor. For the processing of complicated near-surface it consumes even a half of the project cycle time. WiseBreak is a novel tool which decreases significantly the workload of first-break picking and alleviates processor's distress. WiseBreak has an innovative methodology. Firstly, the first-break time (FB) is auto-picked by some advanced and creative algorithms. The weathering model is then inverted from the auto-picked FB, and the model (synthetic) FB time is calculated. Finally, guided by the model FB the erroneous one can be easily screened out and edited manually with high efficiency. With the help of WiseBreak the first-break picking needs only a tenth, and even less, of time. Moreover, WiseBreak provides quality FBs, which help improve the result of processing.
WiseBreak auto-picks FB by extraordinary algorithms developed independently. It is totally free from proceessor intervention. For low-SNR data, especially the vibroseis data, it performs remarkably.
The weathering model is inverted by fitting auto-picked FB, and the model FB time is computed. During this procedure the error FB is excluded iteratively. By evaluating the difference between the auto-picked time and the model time, and other seismic properties, the error FB which deviates from the model FB time is screened out.
The processor can edit FB in two modes, i.e., "all-FB" and "error-FB-only". In the second mode the "correct" FB is hidden, and the erroneous one can be edited quickly by using the model FB time as guidance. The FB and its seismic trace can be displayed with three correction patterns, among which the processor can switch to at any time to facilitate editing. |
For on-site(acquisition monitoring) processing, by simply removing the screened FB from the fitted file, being free of manual editing the processor can get fairly good FB for quick processing. For refined processing before geology research, the processor can get high quality FB by "fitting-screening-editing" iteratively after auto-picking. Besides, the archived FB picked by other applications can be imported for optimization and QC when re-processing. For tomography static, picking a longer offset span is necessary. By dividing the offset span into several segments (generally 3 segments are enough), the processor can pick, fit, screen and edit each segment, and finally merge them into one. For Vibroseis data, which may be low-SNR and has a longer wavelet. Using the model FB as guidance, FBs in different shots can be edited aligning easily to the identical event. By conventional tools the processor probably picks different events in different shots, which leads to poor static.
There are four licensed modules: pick, fit, screen and edit. A typical and minimal configuration includes 1 license for the first 3 modules respectively, 2 licenses for the last one. Either for a big research center, or a small on-site team, there is a customized configuration solution which makes the maximized customer value. WiseBreak is developed by experienced geophysicists and a smart software designer. It has a friendly user interface and is very easy to use. WiseBreak v2.2 has the installation packages both for Linux(RHEL 64-bit) and Windows(64 bit). It is suggested that WiseBreak runs on Windows 7/8/10, or RHEL v6 and later.
